Fans Pay $4.50 for a Willie Mays Autograph/Sacramento Union/March 19, 1984


This story turned out to be interesting for several reasons. In 1984, it was still a novelty to see a sports figure charging for an autograph, and my story here was actually picked up by a columnist at the San Francisco Examiner. The other thing I remember about this day -- which I didn’t put in the story -- was that halfway through the Q&A period, I asked Willie what he thought he’d be making now, and Mays went off on a tirade asking if I was a reporter (he saw my notebook), and then lambasting all reporters as being dishonest. It showed me the Mays “mean” side I had always heard about . . . .
